My Approach #01

Therapy for Children and Young People

Therapy provides a safe space to explore difficulties. In therapy, the relationship between the therapist and the client is at the heart of the work. In therapy we use various ways of working with the child or young person: play, art, drama, music, sand and talking - a variety of ways of expressing thoughts, worries, feelings and working with them. The aim is to find ways to discover the child or young person's own solutions and ways of coping with their situation.

After an initial meeting with the child and their parent or carer (or I may see an older child or young person on their own), and following a period of assessment, we may contract to work together. This will usually mean that I see the child or young person for 50 minutes once a week. Alternatively, I may work with a child and their parent(s) together. Sometimes a child's difficulties can best be helped by a therapist working exclusively with a parent and not the child.

I generally work without a fixed time limit but with regular reviews as to whether the therapy is being helpful.

Liaising with parents and carers is an important part of my work with children, working together to provide the best support possible.
